Adaptive Re-Use - Bellevue Cafe
Wednesday, October 7, 2008 - (Please note the change in day to Wednesday)
Although they may initially appear unsuitable for use, many companies have existing buildings that can be restored, renovated, or rehabilitated to fulfill strategic facility objectives. A concept that has been around since the 1970's, adaptive re-use or the re-purposing of existing buildings for new uses, can provide alternatives for companies with an inventory of underused or out-of-date buildings.
PNC Realty Services recently rehabilitated an old stone mansion at the Bellevue Corporate Campus. Built in 1936 by William duPont for his daughter Marion duPont Scott at the time of her marriage to movie star G. Randolf Scott, the home began as a summer hunt house, later becoming a bed and breakfast. Purchased by PNC in 1999, the facility was a site for intermittent gatherings but was rapidly deteriorating. In 2007, needing an employee cafeteria, PNC worked with the design team from MGZA Architecture to transform a largely vacant 'white elephant' into a beautiful warm café for the employees at the Bellevue facilities.
