COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Delaware Chapter of IFMA believes that along with its mission to provide the best opportunities for development of the facility management profession in Delaware, there is a responsibility to assist those less fortunate with the chance to further their education and live in decent, affordable housing. As a result, IFMA Delaware provides its support to three institutions devoted to these goals: Delaware Technical and Community College, the IFMA Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.
IFMA Delaware is Promoting A Unique Way To Volunteer To Serve Others Here At Home
Serviam Girls Academy, a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is part of the national NativityMiguel network of schools committed to providing tuition free, faith based quality education to the underserved population of our nations' inner cities. It will be opening in the fall of 2008. SGA will provide a personal approach to a rigorous college preparatory education, and in partnership with the families, strive to create a communal environment that gives young girls the opportunity to break out of the cycle of poverty that is prevalent in urban areas. An equivalent all boys' school, Nativity Preparatory of Wilmington, opened in the fall of 2003. At that time, the Wilmington News Journal printed an editorial opinion praising the project, and asking “who will step up and provide a similar opportunity for our girls”. Serviam Girls Academy is answering that challenge!
Currently SGA is looking for volunteers to help on our committee dedicated to issues related to our site selection. I am writing to you as a result of a recent article in the News Journal naming the newly elected officers of IFMA. I hoped that possibly one of the members of your organization would be willing to donate a few hours of their time and expertise to our efforts. The committee does much of its work via e-mail and phone; however as we get closer to actually selecting the site and moving forward with plans for start up, volunteers on this committee may be meeting as frequently as bi-weekly in person.

Delaware Technical and Community College
Established in 2001, the Delaware Chapter of IFMA/ Delaware Technical and Community College Scholarship provides an annual $1000 award to a current full- or part-time student at the school enrolled in the Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management Programs. The student is chosen by the IFMA Delaware Board of Directors from all qualified applicants who have earned at least 24 credits if full-time or 18 credits if part-time, and are in good academic standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA. www.dtcc.edu
IFMA Foundation
The IFMA Foundation was established in 1990 as a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation and is supported through the generosity of individual IFMA members, chapters, councils, corporate sponsors, and private contributions. Its vision is to ensure a quality-built environment in a changing world through fundraising, research, scholarships, and education, and its mission is to promote priority research and educational opportunities for the advancement of facility management worldwide through fundraising. The Delaware Chapter of IFMA has provided a yearly contribution of $1000 to further the goals and objectives of the IFMA Foundation. www.ifma.org/foundation
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County
Since 1995, IFMA Delaware has enthusiastically supported the work of Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County. Habitat's mission is to build affordable housing at no-profit through a combination of volunteer labor, "sweat equity," and no-interest mortgages. They act in partnership with the local community as a diverse group, including individuals, partner families, faith groups, civic organizations, and businesses. IFMA Delaware is proud to be a partner with Habitat for Humanity, and our annual Golf Outing has provided donations in excess of $20,000 to help co-sponsor the building of individual houses. In addition, IFMA members have volunteered their own time and expertise during monthly workdays at the building site. www.habitatncc.org
